Clifden Traditional Music Festival

The 2012 Festival will take place from the 13th - 15th April 2012  in Clifden, Co. Galway.

Festival Programme 2012:


Official Opening and Concert - Clifden Station House Hotel - 7.00pm

Performers will include: West Coast Grupai Cheoils, Clifden Senior Comhaltas, Clifden Junior Comhaltas, Mickey Curran, Liz Kane, Maura Walsh, Chris Maguire, Cathriona, Josie and Una Canavan, Sacra Furey, Maude Connolly, Bernie Conneely, Teresa Ryan and loads more and lots of local musicians, singers and dancers!

   "DARTRY CEILI BAND" - 11 Piece band from Sligo, All Ireland Champions!

Lots of music, song, dance, craic and ceol.  Not to be missed!!


Pub Music Sessions will take place Friday and Saturday night throughout the town and also on Saturday afternoon and a farewell session on Sunday Morning.    A traditional music mass will take place in St. Josephs Church Clifden at 11am on Sunday the 15th of April.


A big highlight this year will be the "Gig Rig"  on the town square on Saturday evening.  The "Dartry Ceili Band" who are All Ireland Champions and hail from Sliog and Mayo will perform on the Gig Rig from 7.30pm.  It promises to be a great night and lots of local talent will also perform.  Its the 1st time an act of this calibre has performed at Clifden Trad Fest and we expect it to be a great night! and its free!!!


Music and Dance workshops will take place on Saturday morning at 11am with registration before.  Details of venues to follow.  Youth session to follow.

Clifden Trad Fest 2018


The 9th Annual Clifden Traditional Music Festival will take place this year from the 5th – 8th of April in Clifden, Connemara, Co. Galway.  The Festival will begin on Thursday 5th April with a Seisiun na nOg in the Atlantic Hotel .  Friday will start early with Scoil Mhuire Marching Band performing on the town square at 11.30am. Also on the Friday, the Official Opening and Concert will take place in the Clifden Station House Theatre at 7pm.  The event will feature a host of artists from all over Ireland as well as lots of local talent.

Saturday starts with music workshops in Fiddle, Button Accordion and Concertina and learning workshops from 10am until 12.30pm in Scoil Mhuire National School with top class tutors

including: Michael Curran and Padraig Kinsella(Accordion), Liz Gaughan (Fiddle), Maura Walsh and Paul Clesham(Concertina).  


Music Sessions are a very big part of the festival and again this year feature a host of champion musicians from all over Ireland.  Musicians will include:, Liz Gaughan(Fiddle) and Brendan Quinn(Flute) from Tipperary, Anthony Kavanagh(Banjo), Padraig Kinsella(Accordion) and George McAdam (Banjo) from Monaghan, Michael Curran(Tyrone) on accordion, Pat Bass and Caitriona O Brien on Accordion and Banjo from Wexford, Mark McCrystal(Tyrone) on Piano, Liz and Yvonne Kane(Fiddles), Plunkett O Toole(Flute),  Nollaig Ni Laoire (Singer) from Meath and a whole host of musicians.  All are most welcome to take part in the sessions over the weekend.


The pub sessions will take place as follows: Friday 6th April at 10pm in Lowrys Bar, Central Bar and Guys Bar. Saturday 2nd April: 1.30pm in Macdaras Bar and 4pm in Griffins Bar. Saturday night: 10pm: Lowrys Bar, Mannions Bar and O Malleys Bar.  The “Farewell Session” will be in Foyles Hotel at 12.30 on Sunday 3rd April.


A big highlight of the festival this year will be again the outdoor gig on the street on Saturday night.  This year it will feature ‘BackWest’ as the headline act. Their a new supergroup on the trad scene and have recently performed for the Galway Hurling Homecoming and at the Gathering Festival in Killarney. They are Brendan Browne on accordion, Maureen Browne on Fiddle, Peter Vickers on Percussion and Dance and PJ McDonald on Guitar and Vocals. Expect lively entertainment from this well known group.  They will be joined by a host of dancers and guest artists.  


On the Saturday of the festival, don’t miss the Clifden Trad Fest 5K Run which will leave from the town centre at 2.30pm on the Saturday of the festival.  Street Entertainment and music and song on the Gig Rig from 3pm with Peter Carey Jnr and a busking competitionwill also take place on the Saturday of the Trad Fest from 1.30pm all around the town.
